Total Commander
The Total Commander program is a file manager for Windows. The functions of the program can be easily extended by using plugins. The program can be downloaded from here.
Configuring the program
To connect using SSH, the SFTP plugin must be installed. The necessary files can be downloaded in a zip package using the link below.
Installing the SFTP plugin
- 1. Extract the downloaded ZIP file to the directory where Total Commander is installed. Usually
c:\Program Files\totalcmd
orc:\totalcmd
. Once extracted, the sftp directory will be created with these files:

- 2. In the menu select Configuration → Options… and in the configuration window select the Plugins tab.
- Select Configure for File System Plugins (.WFX).
- 4. A window will open with a list of installed plugins. To add, click the Add button.
- 5. The file selection window opens. Move to the
sftp
directory and select thesftpplug.wfx
file for the 32-bit version of the program orsftpplug.wfx64
for the 64-bit version.
- 6. The list now shows the installed sftp plugin.
Connection Configuration
- 7. In one of the panels, select Network Neighborhood. You will see the computers on your network, where the first item in the list is Secure FTP. Select it.
- 8. The connection menu appears.
- _F7=new connection.txt is used to create and save a new connection.
- _Quick Connection is for connection without saving the configuration.
- followed by a list of saved connections (none are now displayed).
- 9. To configure a new connection, press F7.
- 10. A window appears prompting you to enter a name under which to save the configuration. Choose a name and press OK.
- 11. In the next window, the configuration is performed. In the Connect to: field, type kraken.
- 12. You can type your username in the User name: field and your password in the Password: field.
- 13. Select OK.
- 14. You can now see the connection you created in the list.
You can edit the parameters by hovering over the desired connection and pressing ALT+ENTER.
Hover over the desired connection and press ENTER to start connecting.
- 15. If you are logging in for the first time, a warning window will appear. Total Commander does not “know” the remote server and asks if the server is trusted. Answer Yes.
- 16. If you did not enter a username and password in the configuration, you will be prompted to enter them.
- 17. After a successful connection, you can see the server's directory structure in one panel. To disconnect from the server, press the Disconnect button.
