KRAKEN Cluster

News:

10.07.2024 - Cluster opening after filesystem repair and updates
20.12.2023 - Cluster down - filesystem restoration required
15.12.2023 - Cluster fully operational - we ask users to respect storage space quotas! Storage overflow was the reason for the crash on 11.12.
11.12.2023 - Cluster out of service - disk failure; working on getting it back up and running. 11.25.2023 - New node kraken-m10 in full operation
12.05.2023 - There was an unexpected power outage in the morning - the cluster was not scheduled to shut down until the afternoon of 12.5. due to a planned power supply review. The cluster is not expected to be back online until Monday, May 15. 19.04.2023 - Set soft quotas for users, see below
04.10.2022 - Started backing up /home/SECURE folders

A new KRAKEN cluster has been purchased in 2018 thanks to the project funds from CeNDYNMAT. utilizing experience with the Supermicro platform, this cluster was built on the same platform. This time in the form of individual 1U servers, connected by a 10Gb switch.

Overview for the entire facility

Number of nodes: 15
Number of cores: 656
Total memory: 4.160TB
Ethernet: 10Gbit
Operating system: CentOS, Ubuntu

The cluster is composed of an administrative node and two computing parts:

  • the MultiCore part contains 10 nodes labeled kraken-m1 to kraken-m10
  • the LowCore part contains 4 nodes labelled kraken-l1 to kraken-l4 (restricted access, see allowing access).

See hardware for more detailed information on the equipment.

Allowing access

To access the cluster, an account is required. Accounts can be set up by Pavel Formánek, tel. 266 053 862, room M4202.

For access to the LowCore part, contact Dušan Gabriel, tel. 266 052 206.

After first logging in, change your password using the passwd command.

Working with the cluster

Quotas

As we are nearing the end of the disk storage capacity on the Kraken cluster, we are forced to introduce quotas on the amount of data stored on the cluster. Currently the quotas are set as follows:

Category Location Quota
users directory /home 2TB
Backup part /home/SECURE 512GB

The status will be verified and logged daily. Users who exceed 90% of the storage capacity will be notified and users who exceed the limit will be warned. Prolonged exceeding of limits may result in account lockout and subsequent data deletion.

We are aware that for some tasks the set limits may not be sufficient, it is possible to request a temporary increase of the limits. Requests should be directed to Jan Pech or Pavel Formánek

Backup

The cluster is backed up with user folders /home/SECURE (you have a link called SECURE in your home dir) where you can store the data you don't want to lose in case of a cluster crash. These folders are backed up once per day to a central storage.

Software Requirements
